Hello, I'm Mike LaValley
I've had the pleasure of living in Ward 12 since moving to its community of Cranston in 2001. That was before many of its current residences or development existed. My wife Rachel and I thoroughly enjoy the community in which we both live and work and I am seeking election as your Ward 12 Councillor in October of 2021.
Speaking to people at the front door (virtually).
But first, a little back story;
Like many Calgarians, I am not originally from our fine city. I was born in the northern provincial border town of Flin Flon, Manitoba, and raised primarily in the neighboring community of Creighton, Saskatchewan. My first full-time job was as a full-serve gas station attendant and I put myself through university by working at Flin Flon’s primary employer, a mining company now known as Hudbay Minerals. After majoring in finance and earning my Commerce Degree with Great Distinction from the University of Saskatchewan, I began a career in the banking industry with RBC, working in Saskatoon, Tisdale, and Regina, before moving to Calgary in 1996. I am excited that this 2021 election year marks the 25th anniversary of my moving to the great city we call home.
Moving on from RBC, I spent time in the automotive industry in Calgary, managing some of the largest volume dealerships of their time. Change is always a constant however, and after more than a decade in the sector, an opportunity arose to apply my technical and business background to start my own internet consulting business which I have successfully operated since 2014.
The neighborhoods of Ward 12 are made up of people not only originally from Calgary, but from places far and wide. We are a group that is diverse not only in our origins, but in our recreational pastimes and occupational pursuits that provide our livelihood. A strength I can offer as your next representative on council is my extremely broad array of experience in many different types of work environments. This experience ranges from hustling to the gas pumps and laboring in the zinc mine, to attending meetings with financial industry executives, and everything in between. Diverse experience, and the ability to apply that experience to the challenges at hand, is why I believe I am a good choice as your representative for Ward 12.
